Easter Baking Ideas

by Monica Shaw

The coming of Easter means a long Bank Holiday weekend and with it, plenty of time to get your baking skills into full gear. And as Spring is in the air, what better time for your Easter baking to reflect this upturn in the seasons, with vibrant colours and bold flavours to match the Spring shoots and blossoms.  Great British Chefs blogger Monica Shaw has assembled a few of her favourite Easter baking ideas below, including a recipe for Hot Cross Buns.

This week is British Sausage Week, and while it may be a time intended for encased-pork devotion, it also seems a reasonable excuse to pay tribute to other types of "sausage".  Monica Shaw explores the joy of vegetarian sausages for those that don't eat meat or are looking for something for vegetarian friends.  She also share her own recipe for autumnal beetroot and walnut veggie sausages.

If you've been experiencing the same weather as us - rain, wind, and more rain - it might seem hard to imagine going for a picnic. But as it's International Picnic Day, we can at least hope for a sunny spell and make the preparations necessary for the ultimate picnic.  Great British Chefs, blogger Monica Shaw,  has her fingers crossed for good weather & asks what goes into the ultimate picnic?

Our resident American food blogger at Great British ChefsMonica Shaw, is from Chicago, but will be celebrating 4th July in the UK.  We asked her for some thoughts on some of the food she'd be eating in the US and some of her favourite foodie family traditions for the occasion.  She shares her Cabbage Salad recipe, often requested by her UK friends when having a barbecue & bringing back memories of Fourth of July in the US.

It's National Jam Week (18th-24th June) - a perfect time for it, with strawberries beginning to ripen and flowers on the bramble bushes marking the promise of blackberries to come. To get into the spirit Monica Shaw spoke with preserving expert Gloria Nicol, author of 100 Jams, Jellies, Preserves and Pickles for some tips on jam making & her favourite jam recipe -  Redcurrant, Strawberrry & Black Pepper Jam.

This week marked the bittersweet end to the seventh series of The Great British Menu, in which the eight chefs who won the regional heats - including four chefs from Great British Chefs site - competed to represent their region in the Olympic Banquet at the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich which aired Friday 8th June 2012.  Great British Chefs blogger  Monica Shaw  watched the banquet & gives her round up of the week leading up to it.
