The Great British Cod Dilemma

Our recent infographic on buying sustainable cod led to many comments on Twitter from both bloggers and fishermen. None more passionate than ex-commercial fishing skipper, Laurence, who wanted to share his views and put forward to voice of British fishermen, straight from the sea.

Other than playing centre stage with batter and chips, seafood pie or given the full gourmet spin, how much do we really know about cod? Tolani looks how cod became so popular & what we can do to ensure it doesn’t run out.

 

Plaice is a flat-fish with a dank, greyish-brown colouring only enlivened by the orangey spots dotted across its body. It yields lean, sail-shaped fillets that require delicate handling and almost beg to be crumbed.

Mackerel is a fish for fish lovers. It is unapologetically fishy; carrying an earthy, salt-water taste with little of the tactfulness of white fish. It is an oily brute and is rich in healthy Omega 3 as well as flavour.

Gurnard has traditionally been as unpopular as it is ugly. But with more consideration being placed on sustainable fishing, could its main weakness become its key strength? Isaac Parham finds out.
