As cities go, London has one of the most varied and multicultural food scenes going. You can get food from pretty much part of the world you fancy. This isn’t just the case in Shoreditch or the fashionable streets of Soho either; many of London’s most renowned hotel restaurants have also started to offer an international fare of late, which is why The Game Bird’s menu of refined British comfort food is so refreshing and has proved such a hit with customers.
Throwing open its doors in 2013 at Mayfair’s The Stafford Hotel as a replacement for its former Lyttelton restaurant, The Game Bird’s philosophy has always been about showcasing British produce in its modern yet familiar dishes. Executive chef Jozef Rogulski oversees the food offering, using his years of classical experience to ensure everything is perfectly cooked and placing particular emphasis on the slick manner in which the plates are dressed. The Game Bird’s airy yet sophisticated dining room, however, has been kept relatively traditional, with velvet banquettes lining the walls, floral patterned chairs sat around marble-topped tables and an elegant central bar providing a focal point.
A real importance is placed on seasonality at The Game Bird and that’s reflected in the regularly changing nature of the menus on offer. Diners are able to choose from a set market menu which might include dishes such as roasted asparagus with a fried egg and parsley sauce and duck leg with a herby pomme purée, or a more elaborate all day à la carte. Here, you can begin by choosing from a selection of smoked and cured fish brought around table-to-table on a trolley and follow this with a dainty lobster Scotch egg accompanied by lovage mayonnaise and celeriac slaw; while heftier options can range from beef Wellington to an eponymous dish featuring roast pigeon and a turnip purée.
Wines are stored in the hotel’s seventeenth-century wine cellar, with over 8,000 bottles from around the world providing customers at The Game Bird with plenty to choose from. Meanwhile, The Stafford’s neighbouring American Bar is the place to go for an expertly made martini before your meal.
The Game Bird is a fantastic reminder that food doesn’t always need to be avant garde or cutting-edge; we often simply want to eat dishes that are familiar yet taste amazing. That’s why Jozef and his team are still winning praise and delighting diners to this day.
Jozef works alongside The Stafford’s culinary director Lisa Goodwin-Allen to ensure that the food offering is constantly developing.
In the afternoons, The Game Bird serves an afternoon tea inspired by some of the oldest boutiques in St. James’s.
During the coronavirus pandemic, The Game Bird started delivering dining boxes to people’s homes including a full roast dinner with all the trimmings.
