Situated in the small village of Chew Stoke, about eight miles south of Bristol and just down the road from Eggleton’s Michelin-starred restaurant The Pony and Trap, Salt & Malt is a seafood cafe that specialises in traditional fish and chips. At the age of fifteen, owner Josh Eggleton’s first job was at a local fish and chip shop, which imbued him with a deep affection for the classic British dish. Soon after, he won a Gordon Ramsay Scholarship and embarked on a culinary education that took him to many of Europe's top restaurants. Having achieved critical acclaim with The Pony and Trap, Josh opened Salt & Malt in 2014.

When first developing the restaurant, Eggleton was adamant that it maintained a relaxed atmosphere. Visitors can sit down for a full three-course meal, but are just as welcome to pop in for a coffee or takeaway fish and chips. The restaurant's dining room overlooks the beautiful Chew Valley Lake and has a subtle nautical theme, with blue and white furniture and model water birds throughout. Perfect for families, there’s a mini adventure playground just outside the building, allowing parents to watch their children play whilst enjoying a coffee or Salt & Malt’s famous traditional fish and chips.

The restaurant's menu changes with the seasons and the available local produce. Josh is a major proponent of the Farm to Fork initiative and has an excellent connection with the region’s suppliers, developed through his time at The Pony and Trap. Most of the fish is caught along the south Cornish coast except haddock and cod, which is caught in the North Atlantic – currently its most suitable source.

A glance at the menu’s starters will reveal many nostalgic favourites such as Potted shrimp with mace butter, Devilled crab on sourdough toast and Pork shoulder with bubble and squeak. For their main course, diners can choose from a range of burgers and battered fish, but also more refined dishes such as Pan-fried fillet of seabass, rocket pesto, garlic and Black Cabbage and Spelt, barley and squash risotto. To finish, Salt & Malt has a tempting dessert menu, with the irresistible Baked cheesecake with honeycomb and shortbread crumble and the Triple layered chocolate tart with orange compote particular highlights.

    Three things you should know
    1
Salt & Malt has a curry night every Wednesday from 5:30–9pm. It’s £9.95 to eat in or £6.95 to take away, and includes curry, rice, saag aloo, poppadoms and chutney. Meat, fish and veggie options are all available.
    2
The restaurant has many gluten-free options including battered fish, which is cooked in a separate fryer to avoid contamination.
    3
Before it became Salt & Malt, the premises was a popular local tea room. To continue the tradition, the cafe serves cream teas, freshly cut sandwiches and coffee.
