If you’d said some of the most exciting food in the UK could be found inside shipping containers as little as twenty years ago, you’d certainly raise a few eyebrows. Today, however, they’re a relatively common sight in city centres. Often home to start-ups or new businesses, they allow chefs to try out more daring, risky concepts thanks to lower overhead costs. Jöro, in Sheffield, is proof that they can grow into something very special indeed.

Part of Krinkl, a four-storey collection of containers housing all manner of businesses, Jöro ticks all the trendy boxes in terms of stripped-back décor, dark lighting and a great soundtrack – but it’s the food that makes it stand out. Chef Luke French has allowed his creativity to run rampant, resulting in dishes which are almost guaranteed to showcase ingredients and techniques you’ve never come across before. His wife Stacey, meanwhile, is the director of the business, ensuring everything runs smoothly behind the scenes.

There are three tasting menus on offer – five, eight and ten-course – and just twelve tables, making a booking there a hot ticket. There’s also space for two people to sit at the open kitchen’s pass, for those who want to be right in the midst of the action.

The food itself is hard to define, but it always features British produce and a hefty dose of Asian flavours. Homemade kojis, shoyus and garums add complexity and depth to dishes, with unusual herbs and foraged ingredients adding interesting top notes. Each small plate is presented neatly, simply and cleanly – a nod to Luke’s love for the New Nordic cooking movement – but it’s never easy to predict what might be on the menu. The drinks list is as equally wide-ranging, with unusual wine, sake, beer, cider and even homemade infused spirits and cocktails all complementing the food on offer.

A meal at Jöro is as eclectic as the music playing in the background, with the relaxed atmosphere guaranteeing a good time. It’s at the forefront of not just Sheffield or even Yorkshire’s food scene – this is a restaurant which encapsulates how exciting the UK’s gastronomic offering has become.
