Great British Menu 2013, South West Heat Preview

For week five chefs from the South West will be raising a laugh on The Great British Menu to celebrate the fun of Comic Relief. The chefs’ challenge is to create a menu full of gastronomic delights, but has to make the judges smile too.

Over eight weeks twenty four of the finest chefs in the country including many chefs from Great British Chefs site are competing in regional heats for the opportunity to create a four course menu at special banquet at the Royal Albert Hall to celebrate 25 years of Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day.

Representing the South West we’ll see three chefs who are all new to the contest. Chris Eden from The Driftwood Restaurant in Portscatho, who recently joined Great British Chefs. He’ll be joined by Peter Sanchez-Iglesias from Casamia in Bristol and Emily Watkins from the Kingham Plough in Chipping Norton.

As with previous years, the show follows the familiar format with the chefs cooking a starter, fish course, main course and dessert for a veteran judge who will select two chefs to cook their menu again on Friday’s show for the judges Matthew Fort, Oliver Peyton & Prue Leith. On Friday the three judges will be joined by comedian Simon Day to see how funny the dishes really are.

This week’s veteran judge and chef mentor is Tom Kerridge a very familiar face on Great British Menu and well aware of the standards required.

Monday’s episode leads with starters. Chris Eden will be preparing a modern twist on ‘Duck a l’Orange’. Peter Sanchez-Iglesias will be tempting Tom with the joys of summer with his dish called ‘Picnic’. Emily Watkins is presenting ‘Eggs and Ham’ although a sneak peek in the kitchen, showed her somewhat under pressure with this dish.

Fish courses on Tuesday include cured trout from Emily, Peter Sanchez-Iglesias has a childhood inspired version of Fish and Chips and Chris Eden takes inspiration from his Cornish home to create a lobster and oyster dish called ‘Gone Surfing’.
